I had low expectations for Last Christmas, but what could have been a pleasant feel-good film was corny and almost entirely predictable, albeit with a plot twist you won't see coming.
Highlights:
George Michael's music!
Emilia Clarke and Henry Goulding are lovely actors
Shocking plot twist
Lowlights:
George Michael's music felt forced and awkward
Tried to be funny (but wasn't)
How original -- a man fixed everything!
Largely a major flop, the best part of Last Christmas was the surprise plot twist. However, besides that the storyline was predictable and not particularly heartwarming. I do love George Michael more than the average person (see my Apple Music profile for proof), but basing the story off his hit "Last Christmas" was a childish idea and doomed the plot from the beginning. However, what peeved me most was the role of Tom (Henry Goulding). Kate (Emilia Clarke) is struggling, so what happens? She meets a cute guy and everything gets better! What a message. The lows of the movie felt inauthentic while the highs were cheesy and meaningless. I'm not saying this movie is a complete waste of time, but don't get your hopes up when entering the theater.
Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out the man who inspired it all: George Michael! I'm a huge fan of his (even though I believe his role in this movie was forced and weird) and strongly recommend this playlist of his best songs curated by yours truly. Enjoy!
