Cats: Far From Perfect

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Rating: 4.5/10

Though a critically acclaimed musical, Cats didn't adjust well to film and is unsettling to watch.

Highlights:

  • Newcomer Francesca Hayward (Victoria) shone as lead

  • All-star cast

  • Great music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

Lowlights:

  • Cast and setting weren't compatible

  • Ian McKellen's role was off-putting

  • Lack of dialogue becomes exhausting

With an exciting storyline, incredible music, and unique costumes, Cats was a hit musical on Broadway twenty years ago. However, the film, despite having the same positive features as the musical, failed to succeed. What was lost in translation? Though the cast was incredible, notably ballet dancer Hayward in her first major role, they just looked weird. While the costumes of Broadway are designed for viewing at a distance, those of film are expected to be impeccable due to the accessibility of CGI and the ability to conduct multiple takes. Therefore, those watching Broadway musicals are expecting entertainment based on music and dance while those watching film are expecting heavier visual entertainment. Broadway leaves room for imperfection while film does not. The sloppy garb of those in Cats was undoubtedly what was so unsettling about the film, though the performances of those involved were spectacular.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out the musical Cats. This better adheres to expectations, and it's exciting to see the story unfold in its original setting.
