The Kitchen: A Hot Mess

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Rating: 4.6/10

The Kitchen should have been great, but the pieces didn't fit. Poor acting and story cohesion led to the audience's lack of investment in a film that could have been riveting.

Highlights:

  • Girl power!!!

  • Great idea for a movie

  • A female director (in 2018, only 8% of the top 250 domestic grossing films had female directors)

Lowlights:

  • One-dimensional characters

  • Messy, hard-to-follow plot

  • Unrealistic character development

The Kitchen sounded so good -- some girl bosses taking over for their mobster husbands? And with Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss? Yes please!!! But what could have been a powerful and nail-biting movie fell apart as soon as the curtains rose. A lot happened in the first five minutes with no explanation, and you were expected to understand and embrace the characters that were flimsy in the first place. The characters evolved simply to fit the plot, adding to their unbelievability. With a lot going on, the story became more confusing and hard to care about. In fact, nothing in the film surprised or entertained me until the last fifteen minutes. You would think The Kitchen would be a great movie full of action, drama, and female badasses, but it was really just a flop.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out the original The Kitchen comic book series by DC's Vertigo.
