The Hunt: An Ineffective Film

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

Rating: 4.0/10

The controversial movie The Hunt offended many, but the worst part of its passive-aggressive storyline was the lack of depth.

Highlights:

  • Interesting idea in today's political climate

  • Unique

  • Poked fun at both parties

Lowlights:

  • Bad acting

  • Very gory

  • Dumb and stupid

Considering the discouraging reviews of The Hunt from both sides of the political spectrum, I wasn't expecting much when I watched it (from the comfort of my own home, might I add). The film explores what happens when a group of rich liberals kidnap conservatives from around the country, arm them with guns, and proceed to hunt them because of their political beliefs. The Hunt should have been a satirical, yet deep, film about the ruthlessness of politics today and the level of primitivity it has reached. However, though funny in moments, The Hunt was disappointingly shallow and failed to explore political bias thoroughly enough to provide any sort of meaningful message. This wouldn't have been hard to do -- they could have cut down on the distracting gore, allowed character development with the main character Crystal, and improved the clarity of the storyline in the first fifteen minutes. This film had potential, but instead it ended up a waste of time that only barely referenced the stubborn partisanship in politics today.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out Andrew R. Chow of TIME's article "Inside the Making of The Hunt, From Conception to Controversy." I highly recommend this article -- it highlights the intentions of the director and producers while attempting to make a satirical horror film that simultaneously deals with politics, and it will bring meaning to the movie.
