The Good Liar: A Satisfactory Film Adaptation

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Rating: 6.6/10

A gripping and enthralling film, the Good Liar is a well-done film adaptation of a book with great actors yet doesn't go beyond that.

Highlights:

  • Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren are amazing

  • Wonderful, gripping story

  • Not terribly unrealistic

Lowlights:

  • Could Betty really be that naive?

  • More characters would have made it more interesting

  • A bit dull at times

The Good Liar was just what I expected -- an exciting, unpredictable film with two great lead actors. It was always interesting and kept you invested with the uncertainty of the ending. The story was definitely the strongest part of the film. However, as the Good Liar is based on a book, how much credit can we actually give to the film if it was good only because of what author Nicholas Searle created? Although it was well-acted and the storyline probably differed slightly from Searle's, it is still merely a film adaption of a good story and doesn't contribute anything beyond that.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out Nicholas Searle's book the Good Liar! The basis for the movie, the Good Liar is highly acclaimed and sure to be a worthwhile read even if you already know the story.
