Rocketman: A Fantastic Fantasy

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

Rating: 7.5/10

A meaningful and devastatingly honest take on the life of often-deified celebrity Elton John, Rocketman is emotional beautifully made.

Highlights

  • Taron Egerton’s Oscar-worthy performance

  • Enchanting musical scenes

  • Great music (of course)

Lowlights

  • At times a bit too magical

  • Varies slightly from John’s actual life

  • Extremely sad at parts

Rocketman is a movie you will enjoy every second of. When I hear a movie is a musical I’m immediately tempted to roll my eyes, but the musical scenes in Rocketman are wonderfully done and fit in perfectly. No scenes are forced, and their grandeur matches the extravaganza of John’s life himself. Though technically the scenes are unrealistic at times (for example, John didn’t actually float off the stage during his first American concert), they match what he was feeling at the time he (the concert went so well that he felt like he was floating), and for that reason Rocketman is a beautiful depiction of his life that is almost more honest than the reality. Rocketman is a touching and fantastical biopic that is well-acted and well-directed by Taron Egerton and Dexter Fletcher, respectively.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out Elton John’s brand-new autobiography Me. I’m still reading it, but so far it is an insight into his life just as delightful and brutally honest as Rocketman.
