Parasite: Provocatively Original

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Rating: 8.3/10

A profound and engrossing showcase of class difference, Parasite is an original take on the danger of secrecy and influence of money.

Highlights:

  • Carefully crafted story

  • Perfectly placed moments of humor

  • Great acting by all involved

Lowlights:

  • Disturbing at times

  • Occasionally graphic

  • A bit slow

Filled with symbolism and featuring an intricately woven plot, Parasite is a film I honestly don't quite understand yet. What exactly was the parasite the movie's title references? Was it the low-class family that infiltrated the life of the high-class family? Was it the odd rock that lingered throughout the movie? Was it (spoiler: the man in the basement)? Whatever the parasite was, it successfully ate the characters from the inside out. The movie was incredibly well-written and engrossing throughout and the dramatic class differences between the two families displayed how money can influence people to disregard ethics. Overall, Parasite is a good film that will leave you questioning what you would do for financial security.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out Old Boy! Also a South Korean film, Old Boy is a classic and is hailed by some as one of the greatest movies of all time. Spike Lee did an American version in 2013, but most agree that the original is the best. Old Boy is dark and disturbing, but engrossing.
