Marriage Story: Love is Dead

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Rating: 7.8/10

Marriage Story is a heartbreaking movie about love and how it manipulates people in both positive and negative ways.

Highlights:

  • Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are incredible

  • The story is well-told

  • The set and costumes are great

Lowlights:

  • Very sad (be prepared)

  • You can never choose a side

  • Leaves little room for hope

There's a reason there aren't many movies displaying divorce in disturbing detail: it's awfully sad. Marriage Story shows how the relationship of Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) dissipates, mostly depicting their countless rough moments with splatters of former love. Director Noah Baumbach does a wonderful job of telling their story from both sides, making Charlie and Nicole both the protagonists and antagonists through different scenes. Throughout the film, their unfaltering care for their son, Henry (Azhy Robertson), is the one love that never changes. If you haven't seen a divorce before, it'll make you question if you can trust love.

Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out Her, a 2013 film directed by Spike Jonze. Also starring Scarlett Johansson, Her displays a different kind of love in a futuristic setting. It's definitely a unique film that simultaneously aligns and contrasts with the love depicted in Marriage Story.
