Little Women is a moving adaption with wonderful directing, great acting, and poignancy pressed into every moment.
Highlights:
Stellar performance from Saoirse Ronan (Jo March)
Genuine acting from all
Beautifully crafted scenes from director Greta Gerwig
Lowlights:
Hard to follow without knowing plot
Out-of-date fashion
Upsetting treatment of women
Though I unfortunately have not read the book, I expected Little Women to shine considering the wonderful cast and director attributed. However, the film exceeded my expectations. Ronan emulated Jo's wit and passion perfectly, while Florence Pugh (Amy March) and Laura Dern (Mary March) were very well-casted. Gerwig showed her fine sense for detail in scenes that were embedded with the brightness and love of the characters, somehow simultaneously remaining true to the history of the film and exciting the audience with a story that didn't age. Gerwig's Little Women is a triumph that works to tell the loving story of the March sisters with as much honesty and depth as possible while making a statement about the time's oppression of women.
Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out Louisa May Alcott's Little Women! The book that started it all, it's hailed as a classic for a reason.
