Hustlers is a unique, thought-provoking story about friendship and will make you question what "doing the right thing" really means.
Highlights:
Great cast (Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer)
Unique story
Funny
Lowlights:
Superfluous sex
Not enough Lizzo
Lack of character development
Hustlers had a lot going for it yet fell short. The storyline should have been more dynamic and the occasional apathy of characters made for a flat film. Instead of telling a heartfelt story of friendship and love, the characters seemed to just go through the motions. However, the movie does bring up interesting questions about ethics. Do two wrongs make a right, especially when your wrong is done in order to take care of your family? The dynamic between Ramona and Dorothy should have revolved around this, but instead their relationship was static and meaningless. A unique film, Hustlers failed to deliver convincing characters yet managed to raise important questions about doing the right thing.
Did you watch the movie? Do you want more? Check out the true story reported by Jessica Pressler in New York Magazine. The movie follows this story to a T with only a few omissions, but reading what happened a journalist's perspective is fascinating. It's worth the read!
